Researchers’ Night: How We Explore Changes in the World of Biomolecules

  • 27 September 2024
    5:00 PM – 11:30 PM
  • Building C04, Bohunice University Campus

The entire world around us is made up of atoms that are grouped into molecules or large biomolecular clusters. These may be proteins, nucleic acids or sugars, which are the basis of living organisms. Together, we will discover what happens when we put biomolecules in a magnetic field that is thousands of times stronger than the Earth's field, or when we expose them to radiation that has a wavelength 6000 times shorter than blue light. Where we can't see, bioinformatics tools and powerful computers can help. We can explore how biomolecules change when interacting with metal atoms and drug molecules or what the tunnels leading to the heart of molecules hide. We can see the whole virus, its components, even each tiny atom. Visitors can explore the (bio)molecules, touch them properly scientifically and take away a souvenir if they complete simple tasks.
